  • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1.75 cups buttermilk

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly.
  • Shape into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet. Cut a cross on top of the loaf.
  • Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Notes

Best served warm with butter.
