Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add spicy Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a spatula, and cook until browned and cooked through, about 7 minutes.
Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes to the skillet; sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
