  • 1 cup buttermilk room temperature
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water hot
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened, for frosting
  • 3 cups powdered sugar for frosting
  • 0.5 cup cocoa powder for frosting
  • 0.25 cup milk for frosting
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for frosting
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt for frosting

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed until well combined.
  • Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour batter into prepared pans.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool in pans for 10 minutes then remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
  • For the frosting, beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, milk, vanilla, and salt. Beat until smooth and fluffy.
  • Frost the cooled cakes with the prepared frosting and serve.

Notes

For best results, ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before starting. You can add chocolate shavings or fresh berries on top for garnish.
