Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef 85% lean
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 4 cups russet potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese sharp
  • 1.5 cups milk whole
  • 2 tbsp butter unsalted
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 0.5 tsp paprika

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the beef and cook until the onion is translucent.
  • In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk, continuing to whisk until the mixture thickens.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes, then layer half the cooked beef mixture. Sprinkle with 1 cup of cheddar cheese.
  • Repeat layers with the remaining potatoes, sauce, beef mixture, and cheese. Finish with a layer of cheese on top.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to brown the top.
  • Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey for a healthier option.
