  • 4 cups day-old bread, cubed preferably brioche or challah
  • 2 cups peeled & sliced apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
  • 1 cup milk whole milk for creamier texture
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 quarters cup packed brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg freshly grated

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together milk, cream, brown sugar, melted butter, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla extract, salt, and nutmeg until well combined.
  • Add the bread cubes and apples to the mixture, and gently toss to coat evenly.
  • Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish, making sure the bread and apples are evenly distributed.
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving. Optionally serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or drizzle with caramel sauce.

Notes

For an extra flavor boost, try adding a handful of raisins or a splash of rum to the mixture before baking.
